Interviewing Suggestions

Set goals and objectives for the interview and remember, while you are being interviewed, you are interviewing them! Prepare for the interview by determining what information you would like them to know about you, ask questions, be prepared to answer specific questions and display enthusiasm!

General Interview Tips:

DRESS FOR SUCCESS -- RELAX -- BE YOURSELF

BE ON-TIME -- FIRM HANDSHAKE -- MAKE EYE CONTACT

ASK QUESTIONS -- PROMOTE STRENGTHS -- DISPLAY INTEREST

Questions you may ask during the interview:
  1. What is the length of time the practice has been in existence?
  2. How many patients per day will I be expected to treat?
  3. How many new patients did the practice see last year?
  4. What are the payor and age mixes of the practice?
  5. Why are you seeking to add a physician at this time?
  6. What are the short and long term plans for the group?
  7. Will partnership be offered? If so, when? And, will there be a buy-in?
  8. What are the current office hours?
  9. What will be my call schedule?
  10. What has the office overhead percentage been for the past several years?
  11. Which hospitals do you cover?
  12. Are there any plans for selling the practice?
  13. How do you attract new patients?
  14. What is the length of the contract? What is the renewal process?
  15. How will my compensation be computed? (Years 1 through 5).
  16. Will relocation assistance be offered?
  17. How will I be evaluated?
  18. How many exam rooms will I be using?
  19. What kind of support does the practice offer, i.e., nurses, lab, x-ray, etc.
  20. Has the practice been profitable the past several years?

Notes: Allow the prospective employer to broach salary and benefits.

Have your spouse join you for the visit, however, unless invited, he/she should not be present for the interview portion.

QUESTIONS TYPICALLY ASKED DURING AN INTERVIEW:

  1. Why do you want to join our practice?
  2. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  3. Why do you want to move to this area?
  4. Where do you see medicine moving in the next ten years?
  5. How has your residency prepared you clinically?
  6. Do you have any interest in teaching or research?
  7. What are your salary requirements?
  8. What are your short term and long term goals?
  9. How do you feel about having an outpatient and inpatient practice?
  10. If you were to start over again, would you choose medicine for a career?
  11. How many a patients a day do you feel comfortable in treating?
  12. How would your best friend describe you?
  13. Would you be receptive to promoting your practice by performing community outreach?
  14. Is a partnership track important to you?
  15. What size hospital do you prefer to work at?
  16. What will you expect from us?
  17. Why did you choose (specialty)?
  18. Why should we hire you?
  19. Are you dealing with managed care currently?
  20. What are your outside interests?
